Over the rainbow: Coloured eyeliners

Summer isn’t a season to shy away from colour.

A rise in temperatures invariably sees the population reach for their brightest and most tropical-themed attire – a concept mirrored in cosmetic choices. Following tradition – and an emergence of bold cosmetics at the latest international fashion weeks – coloured make-up is back in a big way, particularly when it comes to eyeliner. This season is most definitely about big, bold eyes accompanied with satin skin and structured brows. As for shades, we can expect to see a rainbow of hues, including a resurrection of ombre on lids with multiple colours making for a dramatic impact around the eyes – as well as lots of glitter!

To help you navigate this fun trend, we’ve compiled a list of some of the leading eyeliners set to be popular this summer…

User-friendly retractable:

There is perhaps nothing more frustrating than the combination of a blunt eyeliner pencil and a missing sharpener. Avoid this beauty conundrum altogether, as well as the chance of any broken pencil scenarios, with a retractable option – a liner which scrolls up and back with no maintenance required, all the while housed in a protective plastic layer. Try: Australis GelifEYE Liners, $16

The traditional pencil:

The original eye accessory, kohl was once a favourite of the Ancient Egyptians, helping to form Cleopatra’s famed cat-eye. Today the easy-to-blend kohl doesn’t just come in black, and a pencil variation is a part of many (if not all) make-up collections around the globe.
Try: Inika Organic Eye Liner, $34, Tom Ford Eye Defining Pencil, $61, Lancôme Dessin Du Regard Waterproof Eyeliner N5 Shimmering Burgandy, $52.Over the rainbow: Coloured eyeliners

Perfect cat eye:

The cat eye made famous by Brigitte Bardot and Taylor Swift is an enduring trend in the beauty world. But the perfect cat eye requires patience, precision (and often sticky tape) – sidestep these necessities with a liquid liner specially designed to perfect that feline flick.
Try:  Rimmel Exaggerate Liquid Eye Liner, $19.99, Benefit They’re Real! Push-Up Liner, $42.

For a fine line:

For those amongst us who embrace a look au naturale, a thin liquid line never goes astray. But a pen with the tiniest, angled tip is necessary for any precision line requirements – specifically those with a brush thickness of 1mm or so. Try: blinc UltraThin Liquid Eyeliner Pen, $44.95.

Two-for-one:

The popularity of the multi-purpose product has continued into the eyeliner sector. Liners of bold hues that double as an eyeshadow are growing in number, as well as those that incorporate different thickness options in liner brush size. Try: L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Crayon de Couleur, $19.99.

Shine bright like a diamond:

Shimmer and the like intensify a coloured matte shade ten-fold. A favourite of the Glam Rock era, glitter eyeliner is an easy solution to spicing up any beige make-up look and drawing attention to your peepers instantly, without the common mess factor of a traditional glitter.
Try: Almay Intense I-Color Liquid Liner, $21.50, Billion Dollar Brow Glitter Brow Set in Stardust, $39.
