(MOOI is pronounced like boy but with an M)
In celebration of MOOI’s new collection, we asked founder and designer Vashti a few questions.
What is the story behind Mooi? When was it founded and what was your reason for launching the brand?
MOOI was founded in 2012, and the idea for MOOI was planted while I was a brand new mum. Previously, I worked in a corporate environment and after having my first son Kingsley, I dreamed of returning to a creative, flexible and truly rewarding and aligned career. With these goals in mind we looked hard at what excited me, what was I passionate about and how could I combine my natural skill set and flair with this passion?
My time spent in Africa with my husband (who is South African) had introduced me to the phenomenal history, skill and unique nature of African craft. Whilst I was there I visited a place where I could design my own handbag, and I spent a couple of days thinking of the design, colours and functionality requirements of my ideal, dream bag. I took my bag back to New Zealand with me and over the next few months was inundated with comments about it and had women stopping me in the street asking me where I got it from – and from this, MOOI was born!
Can you tell me about the inspiration behind your current collection?
Our current Winter 2017 collection was designed to showcase the stunning and uniquely individual South African springbok hides. This season we work with dyed and natural variations extensively, playing with different colour variations and textures and combining the two. I love the juxtaposition created by this look and our newly sourced full grain leather is super soft, thick and luxurious – it wears beautifully and only gets better with age! I gained huge inspiration from a recent trip to Mpumalanga which is in eastern South Africa, bordering Swaziland and Mozambique. Here, we had the opportunity to visit with traditional artists, travel historic areas and spend time with local crafts people.
Which new season piece is your must-have and why?
I am in love with our new Elise clutch – Elise is so versatile and makes a stunning clutch and converts to a shopping tote! I can’t wait for mine to arrive in navy! I am looking forward to continuing to develop this style in our upcoming collection and am thinking she’ll branch out into bamboo handles, two tone colourways and some gorgeous textures.

MOOI Bags are made in South Africa and MOOI was founded with the goal of introducing to the rest of the world the stunning leather craftsmanship and unique materials used in traditional African craft, while also creating and sustaining artisan jobs.
All MOOI manufacturers have adhered to the principles of Fair Trade and all hides used in the production of their products are bi-products of the economic food industry, which are sourced from Kwazulu Natal South Africa, Western Cape South Africa, Swaziland, Namibia and Brazil. In September last year MOOI opened a family owned workshop, which is currently located in Little Falls, Roodepoort, Johannesburg.
Since opening their own production arm, they plan to take this ethical production stance a step further and have their workshop which is called ‘Indigo’ accredited as 100% Fair Trade certified. MOOI designs are of exceptional quality, are timeless and are made to last.
