The smoky eye

It’s one of our favourite ‘go-to’ looks and this party season we’ve gone with gold instead of grey. If you opt for a glitter gold, makeup artist Lisa Matson says, “Make sure you have a proper adhesive to help it stay on.” So a primer is essential!

Step 1: Apply a cream satin eyeshadow over the entire lid, up to the brow.

Step 2: Pat a thin layer of gold eyeshadow onto the lids.

Step 3: Apply black eyeliner along the lash line, from outer eye corners to mid lid, starting with a wide line and tapering in.

Step 4: Smudge black shimmer or glitter eyeshadow over the liner.

Step 5: Now paint on gold flecks of fluid line over the lid. Layer where you want to have more intensity – ideally around inner eye corners or mid lid areas.

Step 6: Finish by curling lashes and coating them with two to three layers of mascara to add extra drama.

Expert tip: “Do all your glitter and golds first and then you can clean it up and move on to your foundation,” Matson says.

Our picks: MAC Pressed Pigment in Prim and Proper, $48; Stila Baked Eye Shadow Trio, $45; MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Lightscapade, $64; MAC Pigment in Old Gold, $48; MAC Viva V Lipglass, $38; MAC Fluidline Pencil in Atomic Ore, $38; and L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eyeshadow in Eternal Black, $30.
