How to care for greying hair and keep it in top condition

Article by Simply You

Whether you’re embracing your silver-hued strands or keen to cover them up, we’ve got the tips you need for keeping those locks looking luscious.

It’s been a good year for grey hair, from the inspiring Instagram account @grombre – “a radical celebration of the natural phenomenon of grey hair” – to Comme des Garçons’ spring 2019 show at Paris Fashion Week, where models were transformed with silver-white wigs. Its increasing popularity as a shade of choice, rather than a nuisance to be covered up, is a blessing for those embracing the elegance of their lightened locks, with more and more products focusing specifically on grey-hair care. The shade can be high-maintenance, becoming discoloured, dry and dull if not cared for properly, but with the right routine, your gorgeous greys will look their very best.

Grey hair will always look best with regular trims and care, but there are products that will boost the shine factor and help it look healthy. As with all shades, healthy locks start with a healthy scalp – try a purifying and cleansing hair scrub. A thickening or volumising shampoo, meanwhile, will help enhance very fine grey hair. Serums and shine sprays can help you fake the gloss temporarily, and most brands offer options specifically for light-coloured hair.

TRY: R+Co Crown Scalp Scrub, $64. Revitalash Thickening Shampoo, $53, and Conditioner, $55. Joico Blonde Life Brilliant Glow Brightening Oil, $38.

A good toner is crucial for maintaining grey and blonde locks. It will reduce brassiness and neutralise any yellowy or copper tones that can be common due to oxidation and the lack of natural pigment in the hair. Some women aren’t fans, as certain products can give an undesirable blue or purple tinge to the hair, but once you find one that works for you, you’ll be hooked. The best will remove unwanted tones while also brightening and repairing hair. Use a toner in place of your regular shampoo every two to four washes.

TRY: 1. Joico Blonde Life Brilliant Tone Violet Smoothing Foam, $38. 2. Kevin Murphy Cool Angel Cool Ash Colour Enhancing Shine Treatment, $49. 3. Hot Tresses Indigo Babe Treatment, $43.

Grey hair can often feel very dry, brittle and wiry, due to the loss of melanin. Strengthening is key, so invest in regular, nourishing at-home masks to improve texture and hydration without weighing hair down. An in-salon smoothing keratin treatment will also help with unruly texture, while a Plex treatment at home will help smooth kinks and reduce frizz.

TRY: 1. Keratin Complex Timeless Color Fade-Defy Deep Conditioning Masque, $39.99. 2. Olaplex Hair Perfector No.3, $50. 3. Kérastase Elixir Ultime Le Masque, $65.

Cover up

For those who haven’t fully committed to going grey, there are plenty of quick and easy options to conceal regrowth between salon visits. Powder sprays with fine pigments can amp up highlights while subtly hiding grey strands or roots. Other temporary options that will last until washed out with shampoo include pencil-style sticks or mascaras. An in-salon glossing treatment can be a great longer-term option for covering up grey and making hair look super-healthy.

TRY: 1. Bumble and Bumble BB Color Sticks in blonde, brown and red, $41 each, from Mecca. 2. Oribe Airbrush Root Touch-Up Spray Platinum, $49. 3. Schwarzkopf Hair Mascara, $25. 4. Joico Tint Shot Light Brown, $26.
