How to make your makeup pop

It’s the season for bright lips, electric-blue eyes and glitter. So choose a feature and play it up with vivid colour and step out your comfort zone.

The fashion week runways were full of colour and your makeup bag is no exception to this style rule. Pops of bright reds and electric blues are being used to create a dramatic accent.

“It’s all about balance and playing up one feature at a time,” says Tony Baumann, head of artistry at Mecca Cosmetica. “Choose one feature to be centre stage and have everything else as the backdrop.”

Baumann says it’s all about contrasting textures. “If you’re wearing glossy lips, go matt on the eyes and satin on the skin,” he says. “For metallic, high-shine eyes, reverse it and go for a matt lip and skin.”

For bullet-proof lip colour, Tony Baumann says: “A trick we use backstage at fashion week is to apply the lipstick, blot with a tissue, press loose powder to set then reapply.”
