Summer soirees are the absolute best.
Bright, breezy and fun, it’s always exciting when calendar events like the NZ Polo Open, a festival near the water or a wedding in the vines come around.
One thing you can be sure of—other than the bubbles flowing and some unintentionally long-winded convos with people you barely know—is that there will be photographic evidence. Selfies, group shots, dancing heels flicked off at midnight… the list goes on. So how do you ensure your makeup stays looking its just-applied best when you could be on the go (and in the sun) for hours (and hours) after you leave home?
Start with a protective base
The way you care for and prep your skin is as important as the products you apply on top. If you can allow the time, use a good lightweight gel-based moisturiser or sheet mask and allow it to sink in for at least 30 mins. Any sooner and makeup will slip and smear. If you’re going to be seeing some sun, the next non-negotiable is SPF. You can use separate products, but we like a primer with a decent level of SPF that will ensure your makeup doesn’t disappear but also offers a good dose of protection. A dedicated eyelid primer applied before eye shadow will also keep eye makeup in place if your lids tend to get oily. (It also works to hold concealer on a pimple in a pinch!)

Go easy on your foundation
Don’t be tempted to spackle on foundation. For long-wear that won’t crease and cake: less is more. Take the time to apply a small amount, buffed beautifully into skin with a dense bristle brush. A thin layer is less likely to look OTT and showing a bit of natural skin tone is more modern and fresh for a daytime event anyway. Even better, stipple on concealer with a beauty blender just where needed, and then sweep a touch of colour over the high points of the face (cheekbones, temples and nose) with bronzer. It looks radiant and glowy and makes your eyes appear brighter and teeth look whiter. Avoid overly creamy products like liquid or stick highlighter and blush that will slip and slide and then ultimately disappear, stick with powder textures instead. A light sweep of invisible setting powder will set things in place and diffuse any fine lines.

Choose stains and balms
Those budge-proof liquid lippies might seem appealing, but they can feel heavy on and if you’re out in the sun all day they can start to pucker and flake, bunching up on the inner side of your lips, particularly when you’re drinking! Instead, take a tip from the runways this season and choose a thin liquid stain, lip oil or tinted balm. They make lips look healthy, plump and fresh and most are easy to re-apply without a mirror. If you want a more intense colour, choose a liquid lip with a super fine oil-based texture.

Not just for those weepy PMS days, waterproof mascara is a godsend when it’s roasting hot, as it won’t transfer to lids or cause panda circles. Clinique’s workout mascara is a summer must-have, designed to last through even a hot yoga class, it will go the distance whether you’re dancing wildly or just politely clinking glasses. It defines lashes beautifully and removes easily at the end of the day.

Set and forget
The final step is as important as the first! New-gen setting sprays are indispensable if you want your makeup to survive 8 hours or more, and though some can feel like applying hairspray to your face, once they’ve settled we consider them sweat-resistant face-insurance.
