The pinnacle of red carpets has finally arrived after what has felt like a never-ending awards season. From Ashley Graham in Zac Posen to Emilia Clarke in Balmain, the 91st Academy Awards have double-downed on glamourous celebrity fashion.
Celebrating the highest honours in filmmaking, the Academy Awards – more widely referred to as the Oscars – are a global spectacle that rarely flies under the radar.
First, there’s the nail-biting nomination period. Second, the painstaking process of analysing each red carpet arrival (which we oblige every year) before promptly unpacking our favourite beauty looks. And lastly, the (crucial) compilation of every movie we need to watch in the next few months with an assurance that it doesn’t get any better than this…
With fierce competition in the air and a room full of Hollywood’s whos who… drama is bound to ensue — and the 2019 awards were no different.
Who is hosting the 2019 Oscars?
On the topic of drama…Dating back to December 2018, comedian Kevin Hart was chosen for the 2019 Oscars host. However, Hart since came under fire for posting homophobic tweets on his account which led to the comedian’s decision to ‘step down’ from the hosting duty in lieu of a public apology. So, who steps up in place? Well, to Twitter’s dismay, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph did not step up in place, rather the evening went hostless (a cue from the Grammy’s perhaps?) for the first time in 30 years with a rowdy rendition of “We Will Rock You” by Queen, the supergroup chronicled in the blockbuster best-picture nominee Bohemian Rhapsody kicking things off. Then, in a twist of fate, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph did take the stage and — while not the hosts — “gave a mini-performance that drew relaxed laughter from the audience” writes The New York Times, making the case that these wildly talented women should most definitely be hired to co-host next year. The 2019 Oscars best-dressed celebrity fashion:
Pink is a key theme this year with celebrities opting for multiple shades of the hue in bright and full-bodied designs. Metallics and striking blacks are also a popular choice. From full-tulle numbers to delicately embroidered designs, it seems most celebrities are seeking comfort and confidence in an ultra-feminine sensibility. For some that comes by way of a full-length gown complete with bows and flounces, for others via sharp tailoring and a statement makeup look.
