Alanis Morissette rewrites ‘Ironic’ with first world problems

Alanis Morrissette remakes Ironic with first world problems
Much has been made of Alanis Morissette’s 1995 hit song Ironic over the years – the main issue being that the song doesn’t actually contain any ironies.

Fast-forward to 2015 and Alanis has rewritten the lyrics with a 21st century focus – and guess what? It’s still not ironic.

“An old friend sends you a Facebook request and you only find out they’re racist after you accept,” she sings. “It’s like swiping left on your future soulmate,” she continues, talking about dating app Tinder’s swiping mechanism.

Alanis performed her reboot on Late Late Show with James Corden – and Facebook and Tinder weren’t the only web companies and technology referenced. Netflix, iPhone, Uber and Twitter were all focuses in the updated version.

Along with the barrage of first world problems, she even took a jab at herself with the line: “It’s singing Ironic but there are no ironies”.
