Has there been a more divisive trend of late more than the humble Birkenstock? Advocates embrace the slip-ons for their comfort and versatility, while opponents sneer at their overwhelming ugliness.

No matter which camp you’re in, there’s no denying their influence on the fashion industry, not only because everyone’s wearing them, but also in the way designers have been drawing on them for inspiration (see above, courtesy of Isabel Marant) to give us lavish variations that could sway even the most stubborn critics.
