To buy or not to buy? That is the question.
At the end of the day, whether we’re an impulse buyer or a shopper who takes a lot of convincing to take a leap, we all want the same outcome. In an ideal world, our purchases would always end up as an asset in our wardrobe – but unfortunately sometimes this is not the case.
We can be left with buyer’s remorse or items that we simply don’t experience enough of a positive cost-per-wear outcome to justify the original purchase. So how do we become a responsible, ethical and well-thought-out shopper all while trying to figure out if a pair of $400 pants we like will garner the wear and enjoyment actually equal to the price tag?
Thankfully US Glamour has developed an insightful and incredibly helpful cost-per-wear calculator which determines the cost-per-wear of an item by simply plugging in the answers to a couple of quick and easy questions about your lifestyle and the type of garment you are interested in. Factor this in with the cost and other indications around care and when you’d wear the item and you’ll have an accurate answer in no time…
As a test, the FQ digital team took the calculator through its paces… and the results are telling. Not only does said calculator give an indication of the true worth of an item, but it also encourages healthy shopping habits by bringing to the fore a range of questions before making a purchase. We were encouraged to stop and think about questions such as ‘do I actually really need this?’, ‘do I have something similar in my wardrobe?’ and ‘can I create a winning outfit with this purchase and any other items I already have in my wardrobe?’ And if the answer is no and the cost-per-wear is too high? Then the purchase shouldn’t be made.
