With trends moving at light speed thanks to the internet, and social media fostering a wide range of different cultural and aesthetic communities, it can be hard to keep track of everything. If you’re anything like us, then you’ve probably done a sly Google search for terms like “VSCO girl” or “yankii” so that you can pretend you know what everyone’s talking about.
All this frantic searching over the past year has shaped Google’s recently released ‘Year in Search 2019’ which breaks down the top searches across different topics.
For the United States (this topic was unavailable for New Zealand data) the Fashion Style section revealed searches for the aforementioned trends, as well as classics like “preppy style” and some curveballs…. ahem, steampunk.
Other popular search terms speak to events that happened in the fashion world in 2019 – like “Camp style” queries that no doubt stem from the Met Gala’s theme this year, ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ that drew from a 1964 Susan Sontag essay.
