Emilia Wickstead’s touching new lookbook celebrates motherhood
In what is likely to be the most tender release this season, fashion designer Emilia Wickstead (herself a mother of two) chose to capture a selection of her friends wearing her Pre-Fall 2020 collection, accompanied by their children.
The recently released imagery features an array of multi-talented subjects, all stylish and successful – many of whom you may recognise from fashion media – who juggle their respective careers with motherhood. The shoot was inspired, according to US Vogue, by Helmut Newton and Alice Springs’ 1999 book of famous mothers, Us and Them.
It’s yet another high point for the London-based Kiwi designer, who is a favourite of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and countless celebrities, and continues to enjoy the royal tick of approval from the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, and the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle. Just recently, she dressed Olivia Colman for her Golden Globes win for her role in The Crown.

This isn’t the first time Emilia has enlisted a roster of inspiring people for her label. For her 2019 Woolmark collaboration, Emilia tapped photographer Derek Henderson to shoot a swathe of diverse and accomplished New Zealand women wearing the collection – including Dame Valerie Adams, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku (Te Arawa, Tūhoe) the first Māori woman to receive a doctorate, and poet laureate Selina Tusitala Marsh.
