Television presenter and NEXT cover star Samantha Hayes talks to us about style, New Zealand fashion and her on-air sartorial regrets.
How does your personal style differ to your on-screen persona?
I’m happiest in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt but if I’m going out I’ll usually pop on a dress – fewer components to stuff up you see. On screen I’m lucky. There is a team of people making sure I look presentable – a makeup artist, a stylist, a producer and probably a highly opinionated camera operator too!
Do you have any on-air fashion regrets?
Plenty! It doesn’t worry me though. The main goal is to look tidy without being distracting. I want people to focus on what I’m saying rather than what I’m wearing, but if they want to email me asking where I got a particular dress from that’s OK too! (Probably best not to ask where the shiny, lime green blazer I wore on Nightline came from.)
Who is your style icon?
Stylist turned florist Taylor Tomasi Hill. The New Yorker is a magnet for street style photographers and in my humble opinion she has the best hair – it’s red and she can rock a middle part. I also love that she never seems to wear much makeup.
What’s your beauty routine like both on and off duty?
When I’m in the studio the amazing makeup fairies take care of me, but in the field I’m left to my own devices. I use Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream as a base or Dr. Hauschka Hydrating Mask as a moisturiser if my skin is feeling a bit dry. Then Coola Rose Essence organic tinted sunscreen SPF 20 (I never leave the house without sunscreen on). To finish up, MAC Pro Longwear Concealer under my eyes and anywhere else I might need it (it wears incredibly well), a dusting of MAC Mineral Powder and a lick of MAC Extended Play Gigablack mascara. If I feel i need it I’ll add a bit of blush and some definition around the eye. I’ve always got a handful of lip balms and glosses in my bag so I’ll add one of those on the go. Thanks to the invention of HD cameras which highlight everything I like to keep my makeup minimal. At the end of the day I take it all off with Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Milk and spritz with the Clarifying Toner. On the weekend I stick to my Coola tinted sunscreen and a little mascara.
How do you think New Zealanders dress compared to the rest of the world?
We have a tendency to dress casually but we scrub up well!
Who are your favourite designers?
Ruby and Liam make beautiful dresses and I often wear them to functions I MC. They also custom made the gorgeous Liam dress I wore to my sister’s wedding. I thought purple was too bold for me but I couldn’t have been happier with it. Kate Sylvester is my go-to staple for on screen. I can usually grab anything from her collection and be confident it’ll work on camera. I have to be quick with her stuff though because she has quite a few fans in the 3rd Degree office! Huffer and Hailwood are great for casual wear and weekends although Hailwood pulls it out of the box with some amazing gowns and Huffer’s new Aim label has taken their offering up a notch. Meadowlark and Zoe and Morgan are both incredible. I can waste hours trawling their websites fantasising over what combination of gems I’d want for this ring or those earrings. Nike is my first stop for running and yoga gear. Uniqlo make my favourite jeans and who doesn’t love a splurge at Zara?
