Heading away on holiday but don’t want to undo all of your hard work(outs)? Discover which healthy habits you can squeeze in to keep your fitness on track.

Whether your travelling domestically or abroad, enjoying that deserved ‘me-time’ and making the most of your vacation is on top of everyone’s priority list when savouring the special time you do have away. Life is all about having a healthy balance between work and play, but it’s no doubt harder to play when in the back of your mind calories, steps and the thought of missing your daily green smoothie are lingering at the back of your mind.

We’re all about enjoying yourself and living your best life when on vacay, because hey, after all those hours slaving away at your desk, sitting through boring meetings and going above-and-beyond, you’ve earned the right to enjoy yourself.

But if the thought of not maintaining a healthy lifestyle while away (i.e. stopping at every gelato shop possible because #WhenInRome) creates an uneasy feeling and prevents you from doing so, we’ve compiled a short and snappy list of tips and tricks to maintaining healthy habits while away to ensure you do have a great time.

Pack a quick lunch

Now, we’re not saying meal prep like a queen but instead, prepare for situations where you may not have access to a variety of options or food while you’re out and about.

Prepping some quick on-the-go snacks as an option when you’re in need of an energy boost or a quick bite to eat is a smart way to save money but also stay in control of your diet. Thrown in your bag alongside all your other carry on necessities, having some snack bars, dark chocolate, crackers, nuts or snack balls handy is the secret to staying on top of your food intake.

Walk as much as  you can

Move over from that over-priced tour bus because walking is the best way to get around these days. Rather than spending your money on Ubers, cabs or sight-seeing tours – unless it’s a non-negotiable – walking or cycling your way around your destination is the most effortless and thoughtless way to maintain in shape while away.

You’ll be amazed at how many steps you get in as well and how energised you’ll feel compared to that of sitting in traffic or staring out a window – plus this way you can see everything you want to. Window shopping anyone?

Utilize fitness apps

There are so many fitness apps that allow you to achieve your goals any time, any place and anywhere regardless of requiring a gym or equipment, that you really don’t have an excuse not to. With 15-minute circuit options on apps such as Nike Training Club, you can pump out a quick sweat-sesh for a level that suits you with ease.

Choose a fit hotel

Whether you’re trying to tire yourself out because of jet-lag or you’re looking to burn off that all-you-can-eat-breakfast at the gym utilising the hotel gym is a great way to keep fit. When researching where you’ll be staying, shop around to see what the fitness area will look like. Whether it’s weights, cardio equipment or a swimming pool you’re on the hunt for, making sure your accommodation provides this is a way to encourage yourself to get out there and do it.

When making your selection, keep in mind certain hotels, such as the Westin, offer programmes that allow you to rent fitness gear. And not just any gear, designer fitness gear to help you look and feel your best self during your stay. This way you can achieve your goals and have extra luggage room at the same time. Win!

Book a fitness experience

While on vacation don’t let the fear of the unknown get to you, because after all that’s what you’re there for. Utilize the incredible fitness classes on offer at your location and throw yourself into the culture that comes with it.

For example, if you’re a fan of yoga and you’re visiting Bali, you’d be crazy not to utilize a yoga studio there and immerse yourself in an unforgettable experience. Love boxing and visiting Las Vegas? You’re in the boxing capital of the world – hit the punches with a pro.
