The Goop Lab docu-series is set to premiere on January 24th on Netflix featuring “boundary-pushing wellness topics”.
When it was announced last year that Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow was bringing her controversial lifestyle brand Goop to the small screen, we’ve been curious to find out just how unconventional she’ll go, and if the newly dropped trailer is anything to go by, it’s going to be as wild as we expected. This week Netflix announced the first season of The Goop Lab, comprised of six episodes, will launch on January 24th, releasing its trailer and cheeky poster – Gwyneth standing in the centre of what can only be described as an abstract vagina accompanied by the tagline: ‘Reach New Depths’. Subtle.

And it seems, according to Goop, reaching new depths means things like cold therapy which entails swimming under a frozen lake, partaking in orgasm workshops, being exorcised and using psychedelics to go through “years of therapy in five hours” – all in the name of wellness, of course.
During the minute-long trailer Gwyneth, accompanied by Goop’s chief content officer Elise Loehnen, joind wellness experts and alternative beauty, spiritual, mental and sexual health practitioners as they explore unique and unconventional, “dangerous” and “unregulated” areas of wellness.
“Just another day at the office,” Elise jokes in the trailer, before revealing she had an exorcism.
Since the trailer’s release, Netflix has received backlash for being “irresponsible”, with one person commenting: “Why is Netflix promoting this scam artist oh my god.”
Since the lifestyle and wellness brand’s inception in 2008, Goop has been caught up in numerous controversies, mainly for the brand’s false and sometimes dangerous health claims and pushing of overpriced products.
Infamously, the brand was ordered to pay $239,000 in 2018 for claiming that putting jade eggs in your vagina on a daily basis can remove ‘negative energy’.
As Elise explains, the ethos of Goop is to “explore ideas that may seem out there or too scary,” with Gwyneth adding in a statement about the show that: “The Goop Lab explores the universal questions we’re inherently curious about.
“We took the open-minded approach that we’ve cultivated at Goop and applied a different, visual lens with Netflix. “In the process, we found new ways to answer this: ‘How do we make the most of our lives?'” she says. And while we can’t say that many of these treatments are exactly our idea of making the most of our lives, we can say that it’s piqued our curiosity enough to say we’ll definitely be tuning in.
