Another month, another batch of ‘add to wishlist’ moments for the Fashion Quarterly team.
The trouble with working for a fashion title— and seeing so many beautiful and lust-worthy items day in and day out—is it can be hard to define the need from the greed and decide what exactly to invest our hard earned money on! But we’ve mulled over the pros and cons, the cost-per-wear and ensured there is space (both literally and figuratively) in our closets
— to pull together our wishlists just in time for payday.
These are the items that FQ’s editors can justify spending their precious pennies on for the month of May:
“I love the oddness of this pitcher, which I’d actually use as a vase for flowers. It was first made in the 1870s by a heritage English pottery company, and makes a gurgling sound when you pour from it.”

“Can sweatpants be chic? I’ve had this set from cool basics brand Entireworld saved in my bookmarks for a while, but now they’re available in candy pink, I’m adding to cart.”

“Do I need *another* tote bag with words on it? Definitely not. But I’m into the message behind this one, from US female co-working space The Wing.”

“I never thought I’d covet white heels – way too ’80s for my usual style – but after seeing Chloe Sevigny in these By Far square-toed slingbacks, I’m sold.”

“I asked an, admittedly, enabler friend for advice on whether I should add these sparkly numbers to my ever-growing shoe collection and her input was thus: ‘I am increasingly starting to think of glitter as a neutral – it actually goes with everything (blue jeans, white jeans, with shorts or a dress) and I feel like you’d get a lot of use out of them.” And that’s how these By Far beauties were swiftly added to my payday hit list.”

“I don’t usually gravitate towards sneakers but these retro Reebok classics are back and really speak to the 80s kid in me. I can’t wait to wear them with jeans now and printed dresses come spring.”

“I’ve lived in my ivory Mimi jumper for the last two winters – the mohair/wool combo and balloon sleeves means it’s modern, snuggly and most importantly, warm. This deep brick red is a total standout.”

“I’ve heard about their power for a long time but have suddenly discovered for myself the wonder of the wrap dress – it’s literally the easiest thing to wear and I am planning to add several more to my repertoire, starting with this short sleeve version from Kate Sylvester.”

“I desperately need to repurchase my holy grail eyebrow pencil, Benefit’s Precisely, My Brow. The super-fine tip makes it easy to define and fill in brows without making them look heavy – it’s such a winner! I always finish off the look with a few swipes of Benefit’s Gimme Brow+ to add volume and texture to the fine brow hairs, so I may as well stock up on that too while I’m at it.”

“The pursuit of non-ugly maternity wear is a tough one, so when I stumbled across Australian underwear label Juem on Instagram I jumped on their beautiful cotton feeding bras before they could sell out. They’re still in transit from Australia so I’m yet to try them on in real life but looks-wise they tick all the boxes.”

“As winter rolls around, cosy socks are a must. Most of the time though I can’t fit a thick sock into any of my shoes, but since I accidentally bought R.M. Williams boots half a size too big last year, I now have the perfect excuse. These linen and cotton socks by Ophelia Mikkelson are warm, comfy and machine washable – and each new drop always sells out fast so get in quick.”

“If you hadn’t already guessed from the maternity bra purchase, I’m pregnant, and at the moment my sweet cravings are at an all-time high. In the interests of not overloading myself with the ‘white death’ I’m now all about Franjo’s Kitchen’s ginger and apricot pregnancy biscuits for filling me up and satisfying the need for sweet. Packed with omega 3, fibre, iron, calcium, B vitamins and zinc, they provide lots of nourishment for the insides, too.”

“High heels are great and all, but have you ever slipped into a perfectly soft pair of slippers at the end of a long day? With all-over soft sheepskin and a nostalgic, sporty Petersham ribbon detail, these Emu slipper slides are a joy to behold at my front door.”

“I’m (very distantly) related to Germaine Greer and I feel like I should get to know her better. She’s a provocative, if not polarising, feminist figurehead and author Elizabeth Kleinhenz promises to show that there is more to the woman than the headlines.”

“Meadowlark jewellery is made at the brand’s atelier in Grey Lynn, Auckland, where their skilled craftspeople attend to every last detail. I love their intricate August Drop earrings inspired by the Hawaiian Royal Family’s collection of medals and jewellery for the ‘Palace’ collection. Regal with a Meadowlark edge, these earrings are comfortable and cool enough to wear during the day but pack enough punch to be worn in the evening as well.”

“I’m forever thankful to Diane von Furstenberg for inventing the jersey wrap dress. Her iconic style is as flattering as it is fun to wear and has inspired many playful iterations. My latest purchase is a lilac purple version from local label Lonely, who have taken the comfort factor to a whole new level with a soft rib knit fabric, with custom flecks in the yarn.”

“I’ve just bought the perfect slouchy longline mohair cardi from Juliette Hogan. Given the chill that’s just hit it’s made getting out of bed to get dressed in the morning so much more appealing! I’ve been wearing it with leather pants and a white tee and I’m so obsessed I think I might need the dusky rose-pink version too!”

“STILL not over frills and glad to see that neither are NZ designers. This cotton tie-neck blouse is so sweet – I’ll be loving it with blue jeans once it makes its way into my wardrobe.”

“I’m still in raptures over Anastasia Beverly Hills’ arrival in NZ at Mecca. We’ve been waiting far too long to stock up on brow essentials like the Dipbrow Pomade and Gel. Now that I’ve got those stashed happily in my collection I’m eyeing up this palette with stronger berry hues as well as some good neutrals. Anastasia eyeshadows have almost matchless colour payoff.”

“Fully under the influence of the ‘yeehaw agenda’ (including many hours spent sending Old Town Road memes to my pals DMs) I’m sold on adding some western-style boots to the repertoire this season. These ones still have a touch of toughness that I like.”

“Currently at the top of my shopping list is the F.Miller Body Oil. I’m in the process of trying to turn my daily beauty routine into more of a ‘ritual’ rather than a chore. As well as focusing on prevention by opting for natural formulas that nourish… as opposed to having to slather my skin in product and makeup each day.”

“Whilst most people complain about the weather cooling down, my excitement levels rise as the temperature drops thanks to the fact I can now wear my winter woollies again. “I’m always pestering our lovely beauty editor for skincare advice, top of my list to try next is cult brand Drunk Elephant. I love that this set comes in minis… so I don’t have to fully commit while I get a feel for which products work best for my temperamental combination skin.”
