Has our lip obsession gone too far?
Women the world over have been coveting larger lips, since like forever, but now it seems the tide has turned and a smaller, curvier pout, is the lip look du jour.
According to NewBeauty, the website which first reported spotting a growing number of petite pouts on Instagram, the lip reduction surgery trend is largely driven by a new cultural idea that a smaller bow-shaped pout – as in curves like a bow and arrow – is particularly attractive.
The look is rated so highly it says, that women are actually seeking out plastic surgery to alter the shape of their lips to conform to this beauty ideal.
If you’re at all squeamish, be warned the next few paragraphs get a bit graphic…
The procedure to reduce the size of the lips involves removing skin from the lips along the ‘dry-wet line’, using stitches to create a new lip line, and pulling the lip underneath inside the mouth to reduce the overall size.
While the lip reduction surgery is done as an outpatient procedure, it still brings plenty of pain, and patients need a good dose of local anaesthetic before they go under the knife.
Although each lip takes around 15 – 30 minutes, recovery is a fair bit slower. The stitches stay in place for a week before dissolving or are manually removed. Pain, swelling and bruising are common after-effects.
Lip reduction surgery doesn’t come cheap either and can cost anywhere between $1500 through to $4500 depending on where you live, and of course who your doctor is – while lip plumping injections cost between $600-$1000.
We don’t know if this procedure is offered by plastic surgeons here, but if this is something you’re considering, do your research so you don’t end up #botched. In saying that though, at Miss FQ we’re strong advocates of loving the skin you’re in, so like any major change, think long and hard before you go under the knife or the needle.
