The time to let out your suppressed inner ’90s high-schooler is here.
Oh, high school in the ’90s. It’s a period of nostalgia for a lot of us millennials – whether we were actually in high school at the time or not – being the heyday of many iconic fashion trends, TV shows, musicians, celebrities and pop culture references (and captured so accurately by films like Cruel Intentions, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Never Been Kissed).
And as it turns out fashion is just as obsessed with reminiscing about this era as we are, with current trends re-introducing many ’90s styles made iconic during that time of life.
And even though we’re all for replicating the ’90s look verbatim, sometimes it’s cool to give an old-school trend a new-school twist.
So while you consider which ’90s style you’d like best in your wardrobe, think of modernising those Matrix-esque slick, sharp “I mean no funny business” sunglasses with a pop of colour in the lens or frame. On-trend plaid skirt suiting, à la Cher in Clueless, switches out bright canary yellows for soft greys hues with pinky undertones. Nylon backpacks – as in “I like my Skechers but I love my Prada backpack” (from Bianca in 10 Things I Hate About You) – are back but with a pop of colour for a more modern look. And as for gold or silver hooped earrings? Keep them big enough to make J-Lo proud.
