If you don’t recognise the name, you’ll definitely recognise the voice. Haylee Clarke works for the radio station George FM – and we caught up with her in between gigs to find out what this up-and-coming DJ babe gets up to Friday through Saturday.
12pm: HOORAY we made it to Friday!! After a morning of recording the weekend gig guides, I’ve well and truly got myself amped for the weekend. When the midday lunch cravings hit, I head to Blue Breeze Inn or White and Wong’s with Jay Bulletproof (George FM Nights host) to stuff our faces with dumplings!
3pm: I jump in the George Mini with Jay and fight off listeners that want to win the latest giveaway. My favourite Friday afternoon to date was hopping on the Jetski to do a live cross back to the studio, from the middle of the ocean. Listeners met us at the beach and we took them on an adventure to steal the George FM T-shirt, which we draped on a floating buoy. Every lucky thief went in the draw to win a share of 10k and a trip for four to Springbreak Fiji or Rarotonga. #beatsworking
5pm: Auckland traffic is shit. I drown it out by turning up the radio and blasting bangers by Dan Aux on George FM. There’s nothing a cool song can’t fix! Unless you break down on the Harbour Bridge. Nothing can fix that.
7pm: A good night out always starts with great pre-drinks. I’m a huge cocktail queen so I love to throw a classic mojito or a watermelon cocktail together.
A delish recipe I came across is an OVI-licilously Fruity Martini. Mix together OVI Hydation Watermelon, limoncello, kiwifruit and a slice of watermelon and your tastebuds will thank you! (Extra tip: Tastes even better accompanied by a giant bowl of guacamole and corn chips).
10pm: Unless someone’s jumped on the DJ decks, then the UE boom always makes an appearance. I chuck on one of my Spotify playlists to get me in the party mood.
My current top five fave tunes are:
- Netsky – Forget What You Look Like
- RÜFÜS – Innerbloom (Whatsonot remix)
- Calvin Harris – Slide
- Childish Gambino – Redbone
- Kaytranada – Lite Spots
12am: I follow the nightlife, depending on where the decent music takes me! If I’m not vibing out to a good house party, I’ll rock up to a bar such as Impala or 1885 Britomart where my friends are spinning tunes. Otherwise, if an international artist is in town such as Diplo, I’ll find myself at Studio The Venue or The Powerstation with my work crew. I’d much rather sweat it out on the D-floor than on a treadmill!
8am: Wake up and hydrate! Instead of aimlessly scrolling through Instagram and watching friends’ regretful Snapchats (ha ha), I chuck on some gym gear and get some fresh air along the Takapuna rocks.
Life hack: put a water bottle or a Berry flavoured OVI Hydration into the freezer the night before and enjoy it icy cold the next morning. OVI has a natural balance of water, sugars and salts to help me get back on track after a fun night out.
10am: Brunch time! My favourite local spots include Jam, Takapuna Beach Café or Bread and Butter for a strong flat white and scrambled eggs.
Brunch chat consists of yarning about the Auckland man drought and planning my next festival getaway for 2k17. I’ve currently booked Coachella this April, EDC Las Vegas in June and Splendour in the Grass in July.
Sorry, Mum. House deposit can wait.
12pm: Don’t get me wrong- retail therapy is fantastic. But let’s not forget about food therapy! I love to head to the La Cigale French markets in Parnell to get some prosciutto, crostini, and cheeses – so good they talk to you on the plate.
Let’s be real, times have changed. Women don’t make sandwiches anymore; they nail platters.
