Fashion Quarterly‘s new issue is out now and we caught up with Kiwi cover girl Renee Wilkins to find out how she keeps her skin glowing plus some of her favourite beauty tips and tricks.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got to be where you are in your career right now?

I started modelling at 15 years old, a family friend got me into it and I kind of took to the whole thing. I’ve been really lucky to work pretty well from the start – I modelled part time during high school and at university, but have been doing it full time for the last couple of years. Like everything, it’s been up and down and a long journey but I’m really loving it now, travelling and working consistently, meeting heaps of amazing people, living in New York…!

What’s your daily mantra or positive affirmation?

Not sure if I have one… But how about ‘be kind and do your best’?

What is your beauty philosophy?

Sunscreen, always.

What does your morning skin care routine look like?

For my morning routine I start by cleansing, I use a foaming hemp cleanser from CannaCell. I then use a witch hazel toner, followed by moisturizer – I usually use Skinfood and I tend to put a drop of either rosehip oil or vitamin C oil in it (or both). And then sunblock! Every day!

Do you have a night time skin regime?

For my evening routine I use either Bioderma or coconut oil to remove any make up or sunscreen etc on my skin. I then cleanse and wipe over my skin with either the Glossier salicylic acid or the moon juice acid potion (I try to only do this every couple of days as it can be quite harsh and dry out my skin). I then tone, moisturise and apply a Naturopathica eyecream.

How do you like to pamper your skin when you have been travelling for work?

I drink plenty of water and I often add an electrolyte sachet to my water bottle on the plane to sip throughout the flight to ensure I stay hydrated especially on long haul flights. I travel with hydrating/soothing sheet masks that I use on the plane and when I arrive.

Name three products you can’t leave the house without:

Lip balm, rosewater spray and hand sanitizer.

Working in the fashion industry, what tips and tricks have you learnt along the way?

All the most obvious things – be grateful, be prepared, drink water, get enough sleep.

If you have a big shoot coming up, how do usually get prepped?

In the days leading up to a big shoot I cut out alcohol (except for maybe a glass of red wine at dinner), increase my water intake and steer away from greasy or sugary foods that could cause my skin to break out.

What’s your go-to fragrance?

Maison Margiela ‘Replica’ Beachwalk.

What’s one piece of beauty/skincare advice you wish you’d known sooner?

Your skin is a reflection of what’s going on inside your body so nutrition and hydration are key.

Who inspires you?

My Grandma, she’s one of the strongest most positive people I know, she’s definitely shaped me into the person I am today and I hope to be like her.

What does this year have in store for you?

This is a hard question because as a model, life is particularly out of your control – I hope much of the same: working, travelling and getting the most out of all the opportunities.
